What are common job interview questions for a position at a library?
I applied for a Library technician position, and I have an interview tomorrow. What do you think they will ask me?
Interview questions at a library aren’t much different from interview questions anywhere else. Mostly, your potential employer is trying to determine whether you are dependable, hard-working, organized, and have initiative. Give answers that document those traits.
Tell me about yourself.
What would you say are your strengths/weaknesses?
Why do you think you would like working at the library?
(Hint: "Because I like to read" is not the best answer. You probably won’t have any time to read while you’re working.)
Have you worked in a library before?
What did you like/dislike about your last job?
Tell me about one of your successes at your last job.
Tell me about a time that you made a mistake.
Depending on the position, the work may involve repetitive tasks. They may ask you how you feel about that. Or the work may involve contact with the public: they may ask questions about work in customer service.
After the interviewer is done, he/she will ask whether you have any questions. It may seem strange but one thing that really stands out in an interview is the questions that _you_ ask. If you don’t have any questions, that’s a signal that you may not really be interested in the job. If you ask good questions, that’s a signal that you’re interested and that you’re thinking.
Don’t start off asking about pay and benefits; leave that one for last, or better yet wait until they make an offer. Ask about the organization, their operations, anything the interviewer mentions in his/her description of the job. Examples:
You said that you ….; how do you …?
I noticed on your website that …; why do you … ?
How would you describe the work atmosphere here?
How would you describe the dynamics between departments?
How long do workers tend to stay in this position?
What is your supervisory style?
What kind of attire is appropriate?
