Is it acceptable to telephone supermarkets and ask if they have any job vacancies?

Or should you only enquire about jobs if they are advertised in store, with the Job Centre etc?

I would go to the store, ask someone stacking shelves who to speak to about a job, they will give you the manager’s name. Find the manager. "Mr Smith, I wonder if you can help me? I like Sainsburys and would very much like to work here, when do you think you might have a vacancy?"

not "do you have a vacancy?" because the answer is yes or no.
asking nicely if someone can help is a great way to start, nobody can say "no"

Yes - even better go into the store in person with a CV.

I work in a supermarket an I know for a fact that sending in a CV is little use. They don’t look at them.

Where I work there are many applications kept on file, these are looked at first in order to decide if there are candidates that have past the first stage of the recruitment process.

So filling in an application form for the retailer is essential. You should read the form carefully, many do not read the part that says to "tear this section off for your own records", this leads to the application being automatically failed.

The only way to get an application form is by being persistent, forms are not usually handed out unless there are jobs available. Telephoning is the easiest way to do this, or enquiring in the store.
Some stores only give applications to the family and friends of colleagues first, because they like being family orientated. This is wear knowing someone who works in the store becomes useful, because they will find it easy to get an application form for you.

If you are going for a job in which a special skill is required, such as having a licence to drive a forklift, then sending a letter is particularly useful as long as you have the name of the relevant departmental manager. This will draw you to their attention.

Don’t feel stupid about phoning the store. I answer many calls from people who are looking for jobs, you don’t know about vacancies if you don’t ask. Also jobs are not always advertised through the job centre.
