Why was the 'other america' shut out of economic prosperity in the 1950's? I understand that the other america consisted of the people below the poverty line, but does this term refer to a specific race, or just minorities in general, and why were they shut out of prosperity in the booming 50′s

There was a lot of segregation in the U.S during the 1950s, and not just in the South. Also some poor whites lived in remote areas of Appalachia and other parts of the South and Midwest and were also "shut out" from the economic prosperity of the 1950s. References :
