Seeking Federal Employment – How To Get A Federal Job

with 5 comments

When it comes to landing pretty much any kind of job, your resume is the first step to getting you in the door. If your resume isn’t strong enough to impress prospective employers, then your chances of getting hired are already out the window. This is especially true if you are seeking a federal job position, in which case having a strong resume depends on having the right kind of resume. The federal job application process requires a specifically formatted resume that differs from the civilian resume structure, and tailoring your resume to meet federal standards requires knowledge of exactly what those standards are. One of the best ways to ensure that your resume will follow the federal format is to call on a federal resume service to do it for you. But be careful when you choose a federal resume service – you want to make sure that you find one that truly knows all the ins and outs of writing a federal resume.

The main thing to remember when selecting a federal resume service is that they hold the key to your chances of scoring a great federal job. As stated before, there are some major differences between federal and civilian resumes, so if the service you choose is not completely knowledgeable about these differences, you’re going to have spent money on a resume that you might as well have written yourself and wasted time going after jobs that you still won’t be considered for. It is extremely important that you choose a federal resume service that will work hard to create a correctly formatted resume that will give you a fighting chance.

A couple of ways that you can narrow down the pool of choices is by doing some research. How long has the service been around? Will they provide you with samples of their work? If so, what quality is the sample that they produce? If a federal resume service can’t answer all of these questions to your satisfaction, then move on. Any service that’s going to be capable of providing you with a decent federal resume, which will in turn allow you to be considered for the better federal jobs, will have a good track record and readily offer strong examples of their work.

Searching for a job is always hard, and searching for a federal job can be even harder, but the right federal resume service help you navigate the first step towards getting a great federal job by ensuring that your resume is up to federal standards. Having the wrong resume will kill your opportunity for a federal career, so choosing a federal resume service carefully can better your chances of getting a better job, and potentially even raise your earning power. If you keep these things in mind when you finally pick the federal resume service that’s right for you, you can feel good knowing that you’ve made the right choice.

  1. Ex-active duty seeking future career with federal government….?
I was HONORABLY discharged about 2 years ago from active duty. My reason code on my DD-214 was personality disorder because of the depression I was experiencing at that time, due to events that occured in the military. I am now seeking employment with the Federal Government again, through DFAS, but as a civilian employee. The interview went great, but I know they need to do a background check. Will that reason code prevent me from getting this job?

  2. It shouldn’t on a background check but may cause difficulty if you need a security clearance.

  3. Where you informed in any way of RE code disqualifiers? Or asked any questions about your psychiatric history. You would be stepping into a position that relied heavily on your proven loyalty to the government – all of which is on your 214. In my experience as a military recruiter, that RE code would require an evaluation prior to a job offer. I wouldn’t bring it up to them if they don’t ask about it. If it is a concern they will contact you.
