I am a college student starting to interview for internships and even full time jobs as of this summer. I have had a goatee for a few years now and I have heard mixed things about having facial hair for interviews and starting a job. Is it ok as long as it is not hiding your face and it is professionally trimmed? Is it a definate no? I would appreciate any help. Thanks everyone.
P.S. I would be interviewing for finance positions, or other business related areas, if that makes any difference.
Finance is conservative but, on the other hand if you are still a bit young-the beard may add some maturity to your face. I think it’s a personal decision. Check out the staff if you can and see what the look is. You could call hr and see if there is an on line policy manual that you can check out. That would tell you if they have a policy against it. Good luck!

Actually, the old rules aren’t being followed strictly anymore. So many youth today have facial hair that — in most cases — it won’t count against you. However, finance offices want to see a serious person with nothing to hide. (Like you mention…facial hair can lead to distrust just because some people interpret it to mean you aren’t being completely honest or are trying to hide something.) So, if you can handle being clean-shaven for the interviews, I’d lose the goatee for now. If you’re going to be dealing with customers face-to-face, that can be problematic for some men with facial hair. What I would do is find out the policy on facial hair once you get a job. You may find that the office lucky enough to hire you is lenient and allows goatees.
Good luck in the job search!

I have a husband who has sensitive skin and can’t shave often. He shaved for interviews, but has discovered, luckily, that the company is very laid-back about appearance. Of course, they don’t deal with customers face-to-face, which would explain the freedom.

In many cases it is frowned upon, but don’t worry, if you don’t get the job you can always work for Al-quaeda

a nicely trimmed goatee should be fine, as long as its not covering your lips. some people do need to read lips if they are hard-of-hearing.
