Workers from Agencies

As much as possible, the wise option to take is to contact an agency. With a legitimate agency, you do not have to worry about the requirement details for domestic help. Although you still need to participate in the completion of the requirements, an agency will make sure that all the documents are ready and that you do not miss a step. Agencies also offer additional resources for employers and have policies for replacement when a worker is not satisfactory.

Finding a Worker by Yourself

It’s possible that you may want to pick your own help on your own. If so, you have the option to hire a first time domestic worker from an accredited country. You may also simply opt for a worker transfer. This is possible if there are current domestic helpers whose work periods with their employers are about to end. Here’s what you should prepare when hiring help:

- Employers of Singapore foreign domestic workers need to complete an orientation program. For busy employers, an online program is an option.

- Work permits are applied for by employers. A normal worker’s permit will be valid for 24 months. You may however need to check your worker’s passport to ensure that she will be allowed to stay for that length of time.

- Getting domestic help is not very cheap. Employers would have to pay an administrative fee and a levy that is charged monthly with penalties for late payment. An employer’s budget should also cover twice a year check-ups for workers, monthly salary, 13th month bonus, food, lodging, insurance, bonds and air fare.

- Domestic workers have to undergo a test and be present for a safety seminar.

An employer’s considerations go well beyond legal or document requirements. There are also a couple of other important points to remember.

- Foreigners staying in Singapore temporarily may not employ domestic workers. Only residents and citizens of Singapore may do so.

- A foreign domestic worker is not allowed to get pregnant while working in the country. It is the duty of every employer to ensure that this does not happen.

- Residents will usually require only one worker. If more is needed, an approval should be secured.

- Workers must be between 23-50 years old and should have a minimum of 8 years of formal education.

- No other kind of work is permitted except for domestic duties.

- It is a good policy to educate one’s domestic workers regarding Singapore’s culture and laws.

Singapore foreign domestic workers are truly valuable help. Much however depends on an employer’s compliance with the requirements and his ability to provide support and assistance to domestic workers.
