  1. How do I improve my resume when my last 2 jobs will give me a bad reference?
My last job i worked at for 2 months and then just never came back without notice because i was bored of it. the job i had before that i got fired because i missed shifts. Both jobs were great skills to add to my resume, without them my resume will be bare and have only one job i had back in 2004. What do i do about these bad references? I never gave out the numbers to either place but I’m not getting hired for jobs i am skill-qualified for! take both jobs off the resume completley and add in the skills somehow? HELP?

  2. You could make your resume a listing of qualifications instead of a listing of jobs held. A bad reference for a job? All most employers can say is if you worked from <start date> to <end date> and what your job title was. Another option might be that at those other companies, was there anyone at the company that liked you and would give a better ‘view’ of your tenure there?

Get some other references (personal ones for any odd jobs that you would have used the skills at the ‘bad’ employments… that works well)

    good luck

  5. Wow, thats a tough one, I could start down the path of "thats why you dont do things like that…" but Ill leave it lie ;)

The only real option I see is to find a job that doesnt check references or wont care about your past references, then do a really good job while hired. You may have to just keep trying.
To be honest, I do not list contact information for past jobs on my resume (actually a CV). I put a note on my cover letter that references will be furnished upon request. That will at least give you an idea of who wants to contact your references and who doesnt. Plus, if they only need one, you can give the the best one.
A lot of places though do want to speak with your last supervisor. Do you have copies of performance reviews? I was worried that one supervisor I had would sabotage me because he didnt want me to leave. So instead I took along my performance reviews to the interviews and gave them to perspective employers.
Sorry to hear about the situation. You may just have to keep searching. Another alternative may be to sign up with a temp company.

  6. If you take them off your resume, then any prospective employer will see the time gaps in the resume and assume you’re leaving some things out – and not hire you. If you leave off the phone numbers, then the prospective employer will either realize that you’re hiding something, or will just Google the phone numbers and call the former employers anyway. Either way, you’re not going to get hired if you leave something off your resume – it’s looked on as if you were lying on your job application.

If you leave the former jobs on your resume, all your former employers can say negatively about you (legally) is that they would not rehire you.

If you quit a job without notice, or if you get fired for blowing off work, then you have to expect that any future employer will have serious reservations about hiring you. The best thing you can possibly do for yourself is to be perfectly honest when asked about your work history in future interviews. At least then you’ll be viewed as someone who is taking responsibility for your actions.
